Creating the Character

Sparknote from Save the Cat.

What is it about?

It’s about a guy who…

1. I can identify with

2. I can learn from

3. I have compelling reason to follow

4. I believe deserves to win and

5. Has stakes that are primal and ring true for me

Perfect logline must include:

1. an adjective to describe the protagnist/hero

2. an adjective to describe the antagonist/bad guy, and …

3. a compelling goal we identify with as human beings (primal need)

The lead has to be someone we can focus our attention on, identify with and want to root for – and someone who can carry the movie’s theme.

Create heroes who:

1. offer the most conflict in that situation

2. have the longest way to go emotionally and …

3. are the most demographically pleasing!

Think out side of the screenwriter’s own particular blind spot!

The character’s motivation to succeed must be a primal urge; survival, hunger, sex, protection of loved ones, fear of death.

Casting for the role of your hero

Don’t cast the movie before you’ve sold the script!

Don’t write parts for certain actors!

Don’t get married to the idea of one particular actor doing the part – you’ll always be disappointed.
